Being a big fan of the ocean drew me to learning how to paint. I looked and found the Bob Ross has quite a collection of painting tutorials on YouTube. He was a very popular artist and host of the PBS show “The Joy of Painting”. Painting landscapes where is primary subject. When I found some seascape painting tutorials, I really dove into attempting to paint what Ross painted on his canvas on my iPad.
Painting in Layers
One of Bob Ross’ techniques was to paint layer upon layer and blend even while the paint was still wet. His blending techniques really helped me to understand how the sun affects the rest of the sky during a sunset. The clouds also change to a shade of purple when the sun goes down. Bob Ross also explains how colors can be layered to give water and waves a realistic look.
I must admit I’ve always heard of Bob Ross and knew he was a talented painter. It wasn’t until I wanted to learn how to paint that I discovered why he was so popular. You can even have his videos playing in the background for ambiance. His voice was always calm and soothing.
